The Never Ending Ride? Not Necessarily.
Buckle up friends, we are going for a ride on a roller coaster. This is the vivid picture, if you will, of a person who chronically races from one diet to the next. Much like that first big rush on the roller coaster, the results for a dieter out of the gate may be fast and furious, thrilling that inner you and creating an instant sense of satisfaction. So you get back on the ride and do it again, an again, an again!!!
Uh-oh, what’s the matter, are you not feeling so well? Neither am I. How many rides like that have you gone on and at what cost? Let me guess, your stomach cannot “stomach” it any longer. Perhaps you have lost stamina, motivation and willpower. Now the false promises, the lost hope, the feeling of failure, the unsustainable pace and the old habits return. I want you to know it’s not your fault. In reality “the ride” has failed you.
The fact is, the statistics on rapid weight loss are dismal, with as little as a 5% success rate in maintenance of the weight loss. Some estimates support that more than 80% of people who have lost weight regain all of it, or more, after two years. Quick weight loss, specifically very low calorie diets, or trendy fads create risk factors including malnourishment, decreased immunity, fatigue, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, muscle wasting, fat gains, repeated failures and slower weight loss with each new attempt.
Slow and steady weight loss on the other hand, while not nearly as exciting, is a tried and true method that leads to long lasting benefits. A slower more methodical pace of pounds and inches reduced allows for learning, application and habit formation. What is learned cannot be unlearned so even when a setback occurs there is an underlying knowledge that eventually overrides the challenges.
Slow loss, as little as 1-2 pounds per week and sometime less is recommended. Through mindful eating, sustained energy sources, nutrient dense food choices and behavioral changes that promote a healthy lifestyle a “slow loser” ends up with a winning mindset. The motivation is the big picture with the scale not being the ultimate measurement of success, tracking outcomes according to body composition, measurements and health related benefits versus how your skinny jeans fit.
With increased activity, those who gradually lose weight gain metabolically active muscle. They understand (and accept) that the weight loss will come slow and have set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused, and Time- bound). They surround themselves with a like-minded support system. They remove the saboteurs. They learn how to reward themselves with items that support their goals, including cookbooks, gym memberships, workout gear or travel.
